After the Unboxing: Long-Term Care for Figures and Packaging

Opening the box is only the start. How you store, display and handle a figure over the following months matters just as much as those first careful cuts. A few habits go a long way toward keeping vinyl, resin and painted details looking the way they did on day one.

Let new figures breathe

Freshly packed toys sometimes carry a faint smell from plastics and paints. Leave the figure out of its bag in a well-ventilated room for a day or two before sealing it into a display case. If parts feel slightly tacky, give them time rather than wiping hard, which can lift paint or leave fibres behind.

Mind temperature and humidity

Soft vinyl can lean or warp if it sits near radiators, sunny windowsills or hot car interiors, and Portland's damp winters can encourage musty smells in closed cupboards. Aim for a steady room temperature and avoid basements or attics. A small packet of silica gel placed inside a storage box, not touching the figure, helps keep moisture down.

Store boxes flat and protected

  • Keep empty boxes upright or flat, never crushed under heavier items.
  • Use a clear plastic box protector for collector packaging you care about.
  • Keep inserts, blister trays and any cards or stickers together with the box they came in.
  • Avoid tape directly on printed surfaces; it can tear the finish when removed.

Handling and posing

Pick figures up by the torso or base rather than thin limbs, horns or tails. If a joint feels stiff, warm it gently in your hands before moving it, and never force a part past where it naturally stops. Wash or dry your hands first, as oils and lotions can dull matte finishes over time.

Rotating your display

Even indirect light fades colours gradually. Rotating which pieces sit on the front shelf every few months spreads that exposure out, and it gives you a fresh reason to enjoy pieces from older drops.
